I wrote this little chapbook "the other day" (2023) and plan to share excerpts here as well as the complete collection (free) for those who enjoy scrap collecting.
DEDICATION
Thank you to everyone and everything that has
served my life so well. I am deeply grateful.
L’chaim
In the spirit of “Thank U” by Alanis,
with courage and a swift vulnerability
and in agreement with
tomes of Biblical wisdom,
let my words affirm this truth:
it all works together for my good.
BACKSTORY
In 2023, I entered a chapbook contest whose parameters included truth & gratitude.
Only a short time remained before the deadline, but I chose to enter for the prizes of discipline and a final product.
The product in question - these lines, which are all true…enough.
The discipline - to sit still and see it through.
On the crisp winter weekend I spent holed up in a favorite cafe writing this, I asked my server to lock the doors until I could show him
30 pages of writing.
He waited for me to reach my table before playing “Eye of the Tiger” over the cafe speakers.
It was just the sort of moment I was there to capture, the smirks and smiles of ordinary life.
The moment was fuel sufficient and I met my quota before he had to play “Closing Time.”
The lines I submitted then weren’t polished. They’re not much better now. If you want a good laugh, pre-edit remnants are
scattered like shrapnel somewhere on old blogs, I’m sure.
I have continued to re-work my work, as I am wont to do. This current version still needs (and will continue to receive)
fine tuning, but not without a few rules for my editor (who is me):
No changes to original ideas, only spit-polish for clarity
New ideas must become new projects.
No disposal of vulnerability
No shrinking from what is true.
No Papyrus, Comic Sans or Jokerman…ever.
