At Your Service: OJemah (About the Cover)

About The Cover: OJemah

In 2018, I straggled down to the coffee kiosk in an Orlando hotel while on a trip with my soon-to-unravel family. Tensions were high in the confines of our room.
The barista’s sunny disposition scattered not only my gloom but all who stepped to her counter. Her name tag said ‘OJemah’

As I took my coffee to a nearby table, it became clear that Ojemah was a light fixture in the hotel; many sought her out for a quick hello or a word of encouragement.

I’d recently started working through The Artist’s Way, so she made it into my Morning Pages and a sketch journal.
I snapped a picture before leaving the sketch as a tiny gratuity for Ojemah which is still archived @ Deviant Art with this caption: “Good customer service is inspiring: As I got my morning coffee, I watched Ojemah’s smile spread to each person who crossed her counter, even those to whom she offered consolation for recent loss. Those who know about the joy hiding amongst the coffee beans, tucked in the tiny far left corner of the hotel’s lobby, seek her out at the start of their shift- the rest of us just got lucky. #ArtistDate #TheArtistWay”

We went on to connect online where it has been a privilege to watch Ojemah illuminate the world around her ever since.

At Your Service: Eulogies

EULOGIES

At your service,

what will they say?

At my service

I hope they can say

She was always at our service.

At Your Service: Pain

PAIN

achingly beautiful

artist:

high contrast sierras

and springs of hidden strength,

unearthed

At Your Service: Rideshare Hero

RIDESHARE HERO

I am watching for a silver Jetta

two minutes and thirteen seconds away…

I kick snow from my boots and climb inside

“ Downtown Radisson, please“

I am rescued

tonight

from my husband’s rage

and safely delivered

to far better days

At Your Service: Momma & Daddy

MOMMA

She knows the recipe;

has the address;

remembers the time of my birth;

and she

always

always

always

believes that I have worth.

DADDY

He gave me his vocabulary

verbatim;

taught me to seek Wisdom;

find Truth;

and to firmly believe

God is  ~always~

up to something

good.

At Your Service: Apple Red Happiness ( A Story About My Granny, A Nurse)

APPLE RED HAPPINESS (A Story About My Granny, A Nurse)

She left their family dinner

To see a man in bed

In her pocket was an apple

crisp and Christmas red

“I miss the crunch of apples”

the quadriplegic said

So she brought him joy and peeled it

And saw that he was fed
